Writing Parties: Everyone should have one! I am sure you are asking yourself what are they? I developed a program where I invite
a group of women over to someone’s house and we actually gather in our P.J.’s. That’s right you heard me, our P.J.’s. I created
a very relaxing environment of healthy snacks and several different beverages of one’s choice. After all the women arrive and the mingling is over, we gather in the living room amongst a ton of pillows not to mention we are surrounded by our favorite family and girlfriends.
Then I present an educational program on Alzheimer’s: What is the disease?, What are the stages of the disease?, We take a brain tour, and finally I close with ways to maintain your brain. I then ask the guests to participate in a few brain exercises. Those are always fun and definitely are good for a few laughs.
Our last activity of the evening is I lead this great group of women through a hand-written letter writing process. We discuss the importance of hand-written letters, and how it is time for people to get back to the basics. We of course, use a packet of forgetmenot ink note cards. I take the group through a process of identifying someone special each month that they could write. After that little process we all break out to our happy place: it might be on the floor, it might be on the couch, it might be in a bean bag, or it might actually be at a table. Everyone is now situated and ready to engage in writing. I encourage everyone to write for the next 45 minutes. I play relaxing music; some girls bring their I-pods so they can tune the rest of the world out.
After the writing ceremony I encourage everyone to purchase more packets of forgetmenot ink note cards to give as gifts or use for themselves, so that we can continue to encourage all people to begin
hand-writing notes to those loved ones in their lives. Because we never know when we might lose that person and when those letters will become written treasures.
